Our Sheep Breeds
 White Dorper Sheep

Our registered White Dorper fullblood [purebred] herd provides much of the breeding stock available for sale.  We only register fullblood [pure] rams.  Ewes are retained to improve our bloodlines.  Presently we are using rare breed selection for creating new bloodlines.

All bloodlines can be viewed on the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation web site: http://www.clrc.ca/cgi-bin/list.cgi?_association=30&_list=ownedby&_id=5318097

Commercial Ewes are a combination of Katahdin, Black Dorper and White Dorper lines, crossed to utilize the hair sheep traits to the best advantage.  February born ram lambs are usually sent to auction for butcher by May or June at 80 to 100 lbs.  Replacement ewe lambs are weaned with the ram lambs at two to three months of age, then returned to the pasture for the summer.  We do not wither lambs but do dock all tails.

Below is a picture taken in the summer of 2008 of our large herd on pasture.  These are a mixture of the 3 hair breeds we use.  The collar tags provide us with easy identification with out having to catch or handle the ewes although that is often not a problem with these very friendly ladies.

Ewes and rams exhibit early puberty and generally have a long productive life.  Mature ewes usually have twins, occasionally producing triplets or quadruplets.  A well-managed and selected flock should produce a 200% lamb crop.  Rams are aggressive breeders, generally fertile year round,

and can settle a large number of ewes in the first cycle of exposure.  With selection a flock can consistently lamb throughout the year. (In Canada we notice a lull in breeding during late spring) The Katahdin ewe shows a strong, protective mothering instinct, usually lambs without assistance, and has ample milk for her lambs.

Lambs produce a high quality, well-muscled carcass that is naturally lean and consistently offers a very mild flavor.  Lambs are comparable to other medium-sized maternal breeds in growth and cutability.  Lambs are desirable for specialty markets at a variety of ages and weights, wethers are appropriate for conventional North American markets at 95 to 115 pounds.

 Black Dorper Sheep
We have used Black Dorper rams as the basis of our original breeding program and have been very happy with the overall size and build created through this breeding program.   We are shifting to the White Dorper genetics now to put greater height to our ewes and ensure a good outcross in the crossbred ewes.  Please visit the sale page to view black dorper Semen for sale.

Face Value: Sheep & Smiles
It seems sheep are discerning eaters?at least when it comes to who serves them. In a 2004 study, researchers at Cambridge University in England gave sheep the choice of two doors to push open to get food. One door depicted a smiling human, the other an angry one. By a vast majority, the sheep chose the door with the smiling face.
